Sir John Barrow Monument - intrepid explorer from Ulverston and a founder member of the Royal Geographic Society and for forty years was Second Secretary to the Admiralty an extremely powerful position. Spearheading expeditions with the Royal Navy his discoveries included the North West Passage. He died in 1848 and the town constructed a monument in his memory.
