The Eastern Region of England is made up of six counties - Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, four unitary authority areas: Luton, Peterborough, Southend and Thurrock. The regions population now exceeds 5 million (2004), 9% of which is Englands total population; the East of England is one of the fastest-growing areas in the UK. The region has the lowest recorded crime rate and unemployment in the country.
