About The County of Cumbria - Cumbria has an approximate population of 499,00,00 (2005). Cumbria was formed in 1974 after the passage of the Local Government Act 1972. The county consists of six districts. Cumbria is found to the west of the Irish Sea, to the south by Lancashire, to the southeast of North Yorkshire, and to the east of County Durham and Northumberland. Scotland lies directly to the north. Mostly a rural county, Cumbria is home to the Lake District National Park which is considered one of the most beautiful areas of the United Kingdom by many. The area has provided inspiration for generations of British and foreign artists, writers, explorers, and musicians such as Wordsworth, Ruskin, Potter and Barrow. Much of the county is mountainous, with the highest point of the county and England being Scafell Pike at 978m or 3210 ft. All the territory in England that is over 3,000 feet above sea level is in located Cumbria.
