Clackmannanshire is one of the 32 local government council areas of Scotland bordering Perth and Kinross, Stirling District and Fife. The council area was created in 1996, under the Local Government act 1994, with the boundaries of the former Clackmannan district of the Central region. In population terms it is the smallest council area in mainland Scotland with a population of 49,000, around half of which live in the main town Alloa.
