About The County of Cheshire - Cheshire has an approximate admin population of 995,000 and total area population of 680,000 (2005). Cheshire is in North West England. The county town, and the location of the county council, is the city of Chester. Cheshire's major towns include Congleton, Crewe, Ellesmere Port, Runcorn, Macclesfield, Northwich, Warrington and Wilmslow. The counties neighbours include Merseyside and Greater Manchester to the north, Derbyshire to the east, Staffordshire and Shropshire to the south, Flintshire and Wrexham in Wales to the west. Cheshire is mostly rural with a number of small towns and villages that support an agricultural industry. It is historically famous for the production of Cheshire cheese, salt and silk.
