Brighton is located on the south coast of England connected with its immediate neighbour Hove forming the city of Brighton and Hove. Brighton is one of the largest settlements by the sea in the United Kingdom. The ancient settlement of Brighthelmston dates from before the Domesday Book in 1086. Brighton became a popular tourist destination because of the sea and fine weather when the railway arrived in 1841. Today Brighton forms part of a conurbation stretching along England's south coast, with a population close to 480,000.
